You Can Tell Everything By Somebody's Shoes
I don't trust people who arrive with spotless shoes.
Not because clean shoes are suspicious.
Because they usually haven't been anywhere.
A good pair of loafers should know a terrace. They should have walked around a pool at sunset. They should have stood on Court Three waiting for someone who insisted the last ball clipped the line.
Yesterday I watched a gentleman apologise because he'd scuffed his suede.
I congratulated him. Now they look expensive.
The finest things in life should never look new.
Cars. Leather. Whiskey. Friendships.
The same applies to people.

You'll notice Vivian never wears anything loud. She doesn't need to. People who are certain of themselves rarely announce it.
That's true in linen. It's true in business. It's true in padel.
Winning quietly is a wonderful habit.

Björn Borg has won his first Wimbledon title. Twenty years old. Cool enough to make winning appear almost accidental.
Arthur spent most of Sunday admiring the way Borg never hurried between points. Vivian was looking at something else entirely.

At 8:37 the sun disappeared behind the San Jacinto Mountains.
Nobody moved.
Rafael lit the lanterns. Antonio sent out another plate of olives without being asked. Vivian straightened a chair by perhaps half an inch.
Arthur noticed none of this.
Which is precisely why the club feels exactly as it should.
